Amazing things to see and do

Somerset Levels Cycling Holidays

Cycles can be hired in Glastonbury or a few miles away in Burtle. The expansive, flat terrain is ideal for the leisure cyclist, following cycle tracks and disused railways across lush green pastures.

The area is also well served by National Cycle Networks, including the Route 3 – the West Country Way.

Somerset Levels Bird Watching Holidays and Short Breaks

The Avalon Marshes, once covered by the sea, now form a network of reserves managed for nature conservation. After the sea retreated and vegetation decayed it became peat, first extracted for fuel by the Romans, while mechanical peat removal took place from the 1960s to the 1990s. The wetlands are now host to the major nature reserves of the Somerset Levels and Moors – many being just a few minutes away from Lawn Cottage.

Westhay Moor – Otter Watching

Westhay, managed by Somerset Wildlife Trust, is internationally famous as an outstanding site for birdwatchers. In the summer the reed beds are alive with the sound of reed bunting. Throughout the year you may be lucky enough to catch site of an otter or two enjoying a morning swim.

The Starlings at Westhay – A Murmuration

Westhay’s biggest attraction for birdwatchers arrive annually in autumn and stay through to late winter or early spring  – literally several million starlings which fill the sky as they arrive to roost among the reeds each afternoon, before dusk. Once seen, this stirring spectacle will never be forgotten and it is worth journeying to the area for this experience alone. For up-to-date information call the Starling Hotline 07866 554142, Nov to Feb.
